Watching Rods
Oil on canvas, 2024
“Watching Rods” investigates the interplay between light and a moving water surface, evoking the contemplative effect of water. Waveforms distort the reflections of smooth rods into organic, curving paths. Distorted light causes contrasting bands of dark and light near the peaks of waves. Together, these natural forms guide the observer throughout the water’s surface. Bubbles in the foreground lead the into finer details.

My color palette (phthalo blue, ultramarine blue, burnt sienna) allowed me to subtly shift the blue hues and create a rich black. I started with a pink underpainting, which gives a purple tone in the thinner layers, especially near the horizon.
